Naive schoolgirl Miaka finds the "The Universe of the Four Gods", an ancient and mystical book. The book says that whoever can finish the story will be granted three wishes. Finishing the story however is no easy task! Opening the volume, Miaka and her best friend Yui are magically drawn into the dangerous world described in the book!
Fushigi Yuugi is an excellent story filled with action and romance, and with both tragedy and comedy. Miaka's enthusiasm, bluntness and naievete make her a very funny and loveable character.
Fushigi Yuugi is comprised of the original 18-book manga series, a 52-episode TV series and three OAV (direct-to-video) series (OAV I, OAV II and Eikoden are 3, 6, and 4 episodes long respectively). There was also a 3-episode series of short comedy episodes featuring Miaka and co on a road trip (the "bus" OVA); this was included as a bonus for fans who bought the series on video.
Note on Japanese-English Translation: The title of this series contains a Japanese "double-vowel" sound that can be written in English as "Yuugi" or "Yûgi". It is pronounced 'yu-u-gi'. The kanji symbols on the cover of the magical book are: "Four", "God", "Heaven", "Earth", which together means "The Universe of the Four Gods" although it is sometimes also translated more literally as "The Four Gods Heaven and Earth".
Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden, the story of Takiko Okuda who became Priestess of Genbu, is now available in English!
