Miserable and rejected, Youta rents a (ahem) video to cheer himself up. Much to his astonishment, the "video girl" comes to life! She informs him that it's her job as a video girl to fix his love life, and she certainly takes on the job with enthusiasm. It's hard to characterize this show; at one moment it's sad, almost tender, and the next moment it's pure male adolescent fantasy. The overall storyline is pretty good, but I found the OVA ending a disappointment. The manga version has a different ending to the first story arc and then continues on for several more volumes. The Video Girl Ai manga is considered one of Katsura's best works. Characters are more complex than they might at first seem, and the well-paced story is full of surprises.
