Adolf
Description quoted from the American publisher Viz:
ADOLF, an epic manga series opposing war, anti-Semitism,
racism, and imperialism, is widely regarded as one of Osamu
Tezuka's finest works. ADOLF was one of the first manga
books to be published in a deluxe hardcover format and to be
sold not in the manga corners of stores but in the
literature section. In 1986, it won the coveted Kodansha
Manga Award.
Fred Schodt, acclaimed author of MANGA! MANGA! THE WORLD OF
JAPANESE COMICS, writes, "Although ADOLF is a work of
fiction, it incorporates a great deal of well-known and not
so well-known aspects of actual history. To many
non-Japanese readers, in fact, ADOLF will provide a
perspective on World War II that is new, unusual, and
provocative. It is not only a Japanese view of what was a
truly global war, but it is Osamu Tezuka's..."
On the eve of World War II, the destinies of three men named
"Adolf" - including the infamous dictator of Germany's Third
Reich - become inexorably intertwined... ADOLF: A TALE OF
THE TWENTIETH CENTURY and ADOLF: AN EXILE IN JAPAN are the
first two volumes in Tezuka's epic saga. ADOLF: THE
HALF-ARYAN, the third volume in the ADOLF series, is due out
in May.
Osamu Tezuka, known in Japan as the "God of Manga,"
revolutionized manga since his debut in the late 1940s. He
is also the world-renowned animator of such classic series
as ASTRO BOY and KIMBA, THE WHITE LION. He was the first
manga artist to incorporate cinematic techniques in his
artwork and to explore unusual themes for his stories.
Writes Tezuka, "I thought the potential of manga was more
than getting a laugh; using themes of tears and sorrow,
anger and hatred, I made stories that didn't always have
happy endings."
