A rather unique series by the "Godfather of Manga" Osamu Tezuka. Blackjack is a mysterious surgeon who will operate on anyone who can pay his million dollar fees. Although he is hideously scarred and shunned by society, the skills behind his risky and unconventional operations are known to be second-to-none. Naturally Blackjack is sometimes hired to perform immoral operations, usually leading him to mete out his own forms of ironic justice.
The author Osamu Tezuka first started publishing comics while studying medicine at university in the 1940's. Tezuka never worked as a doctor but went on to publish many famous comics throughout his life. Black Jack and his juvenile assistant Pinocco both became a very well known characters in the world of anime and manga. In 2003, a BlackJack special TV mini-series was produced to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the first appearance of this memorable character.
