When we think of anime & manga we often think of detailed serialized stories like Dragon Ball or Evangelion. However, Japan also has its equivalents of the Sunday Funnies and Azumanga Daioh falls more into this latter category. Originally a series of 4-panel gag strips but now also an anime, Azumanga Daioh features comical daily-life misadventures amongst a group of high-school girls and their teachers. The series has become very popular, in part due to the attractiveness of the female protagonists. If anime is a once-in-a-while thing for you, you'll probably find Azumanga too slow but the hard-core anime fan is sure to delight in its gentle yet warped humour.
