A young Princess is imprisoned by a selfish sorceror until she remembers to listen to her own heart. The film is based on the book The Clever Princess by feminist author Diana Coles, although at the time of writing I can find no references to the book other than in discussions of the animated film and an out-of-print listing at Amazon.UK. Although the theme is interesting, the film's 105 minutes go by very slowly and one is left with the impression that perhaps the story worked better as a book. The name Arete comes from the ancient greek epic, The Odessey, in which Arete was the wise Queen of the Phaecians. (See also: Nausicaa).
