This epic historical drama is centered around the life story of Prince Siddhartha who achieved enlightenment and became known as Buddha. Rather then simply reiterating the traditional history of Buddha, Tezuka created a series of dramatic adventures and stories that bring the world of ancient India to life. However, this is not a squeaky-clean bible comic; the characters, some historical and some fictional, experience all the aspects of real life- fear of death, experiences of cruelty and torture, lust and love. An American version is presently (2004) being published in a high-quality hardcover format by Vertical Press. A great way to get a taste of a fascinating subject.
