Shonen Jump

Shonen Jump is Japan's most popular manga (comics) magazine. The Japanese edition currently has a weekly circulation of about 3 million copies. Each issue contains 300-400 pages of comics. Normally all the comics are drawn in black-and-white although special color pages occasionally appear. Shonen Jump is aimed at young males (the word shonen means boy) and it features action, adventure and comedy stories. Shonen Jump was the original publication venue for mega-hits such as Dragonball and Naruto. Series that prove popular in the magazine are reprinted in paper-novel sized formats for collecting. In Japanese this format is called a tankoubon. Since 2003 an English edition of Shonen Jump has been published. This monthly version runs about 300 pages per issue and has a cover price of $4.99. Series featured in the English edition have included Shaman King, Dragonball, One Piece, Sandland, Hikaru no Go, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, and Yu-Gi-Oh. The series that appear in Shonen Jump magazine as well as many other series from the Shonen Jump publishing family are also reprinted in English as 'graphic novels'- these are English equivalents to the Japanese tankoubon editions.
