Case Closed

Conan Edogawa looks like a little boy but really he is a teenager stuck in a child's body. Originally Conan was a seventeen year old named Shinichi Kudo, who was famous for solving mysteries. One time when he was out with Ran, his female friend since childhood, Shinichi spotted a suspicious man and followed him. Shinichi witnessed a shady deal but he was knocked out from behind by another black-trenchcoat wearing man. The criminals forced Shinichi to take a strange drug that they said would leave no evidence. The drug made Shinichi's body shrink, but it didn't work completely and it stopped when he had the body of an 8 year old.

To protect himself and his loved ones from these criminals, Shinichi assumed a new identity as the boy Conan Edogawa. This name comes from two famous mystery writers: Arthur Conan Doyle and Ranpo Edogawa. As Conan, he lives with Ran and her bumbling private detective father, Mr. Mouri. The only person who knows Conan's true identity from the start is Professor Agasa, a mad inventor who provides Conan with useful crime-fighting gadgets such as tranquilizer darts, a voice-changing bow-tie, and power-boosting sneakers. Agasa suggested that by following the private detective Mr. Mouri, Conan might encounter a case involving the Black Organization. However Mouri is hopelessly incompetent so Conan has to solve all the mysteries, while still keeping his identity secret!

More Info

English Version (Case Closed). The English version of Meitantei Conan is called 'Case Closed: The Secret Life of Jimmy Kudo'. Many of the TV episodes were shown on Cartoon Network in the Adult Swim segment and are available on DVD. The manga (comic books) and some of the movies are also available. In English, Jimmy Kudo is his original name and Edgar Conan Doyle is his assumed name. Everyone calls him 'Conan', of course. In English Ran is named Rachel and her father Mouri Kogoro is called Richard Moore.

Continuity
Most episodes of Meitantei Conan/Case Closed contain a single complete story and can be watched in any order. However there are also some multi-part episodes, and several ongoing subplots. In general you can piece things together even if you watch it out of order.

Comments/Opinion
Case Closed is very different from most popular animes in that it has a believeable and realistic setting, with only one fantasy twist. The characters are genuine and the drama is engaging while still light enough to be entertaining. Although it's often easy to guess the culprit (and sometimes intentionally obvious), it's usually a decent challenge to figure out both the culprit and the proof. Conan is very popular in Japan and has reached over 500 episodes! Nevertheless it is a great series for casual viewing as most of the episodes and movies can stand alone. Despite the cute cartoonish style of drawing, many of the mysteries involve serious violent crimes so Case Closed is recommended for teen and older audiences.

Characters (Partial List) (Japanese names in Japanese name order)

Kudo Shinichi (Jimmy Kudo) - The teenaged detective. His brilliant deductions were inspired by his hero Sherlock Holmes but success inflated his ego and he became overconfident. While visiting a theme park with Ran/Rachel he ran off to follow a suspicious-looking man. He uncovered an extortion plot but was captured by the criminals and given a strange poison. The crooks left him for dead and ran off. The poison caused his body to shrink but the effect stopped when he reached the size of an 8-year old.

Mouri Ran (Rachel Moore) - She and Shinichi/Jimmy were friends and maybe more although neither one admitted it. She and her father take care of Conan after being asked by Professor Agasa. She doesn't know Conan's true identity. Since turning into Conan, Jimmy/Shinichi sometimes contacts Ran/Rachel by telephone using the voice-changing device that Professor Agasa made.

Edogawa Conan (Edgar Conan Doyle) - After his body shrank Shinichi/Jimmy assumed the identity of Conan, an 8-year old boy who loves playing detective. Although his appearance grew younger his attitude became more mature. Conan is determined to keep his identity secret until he can learn the secrets of the mysterious men in black and return himself to normal.

Mouri Kogoro (Richard Moore) - Rachel's father runs a detective agency but was never very successful until Conan arrived. He doesn't realize (or doesn't want to realize) that it's all because of Conan's help. Conan's usual trick is to put Mouri/Moore to sleep using his tranquilizer dart gun, then use his voice-changing gadget to solve the mystery using Mouri/Moore's voice.

Professor Agasa - A mad inventor and Shinichi/Jimmy's neighbour. He knows Conan's true identity and arranged for Conan to live with the Mouri/Moore family with the idea that Mr. Mouri's detective work might lead Conan to the black organization with the secret age-reversal drug.

Megure-Keibu (Inspector Megure) - Senior detective for Beika City area where Conan lives. He and Mouri/Moore used to be partners in the police. Originally Megure had a low opinion of Moure/Moore's abilities but after he began solving many tough cases (with Conan's secret help), Megure became a strong admirer of Mouri/Moore and often consults with him.

Yoshida Ayumi (Amy) - Conan's grade school classmate and member of the Detective Shonen/Detective Boys club. Amy is adventurous, unreserved, and very impressed with Conan.

Kojima Genta (George) - More muscle than brain, George loves investigating mysteries and won't back down to anyone. Has a crush on Amy.

Tsuburaya Mitsuhiko (Mitch) - Conan's freckled classmate. The fourth member of the Detective Boys club. Nervous and high-strung, Mitch is the least brave club member but is also more observant and knowledgeable than most kids his age. Also has a crush on Amy.

Haibara Ai - Classmate of Conan, with a secret past. Her sister was murdered by the black organization.

Eri - Ran's super-capable mother. She left Kogoro because of his drinking, gambling, and womanizing. Eri works as an attorney. Shinichi/Conan is kind of afraid of her!

Kudo Yusaku & Fujimine Yukiko/Mr. & Mrs. Kudo - Jimmy/Shinichi's parents live overseas (in the Japanese version they live in America) and are rarely seen. His father Yusaku is a mystery novel writer while his mother is an actress. In the second season of adventures they learned about their son's true situation and help provide a cover story for Conan.

Hattori Heiji - A teenage detective from the city of Osaka in the Kansai region who becomes Shinichi's friendly rival in mystery solving. Hattori figures out Conan's true identity fairly early on. Heiji's father is a police chief.

Kazuha - Hattori's girlfriend. Her father is also a police detective. She is always trying to get Heiji less interested in policework and more interested in romance.

Suzuki Sonoko - Ran/Rachel's friend. A rather shallow personality but a strong friend to Rachel. Always picks on Conan. Always trying to find the perfect boyfriend.

Kaitou Kid - A teenaged jewel thief who strongly resembles Kudo, and who is Conan's equal in cleverness. Knows Conan's true identity.

Jody Santemillion - Ran/Rachel's English teacher. A glamorous blonde American who wears provocative clothing and comes across as an airhead. However, there is more to her than meets the eye.

Sato Miwako - A young but workaholic woman police detective. She has beautiful looks but a sharp personality and direct manner. Her late father was also a policeman.

Takagi - A young police detective whose intentions are good but whose lack of confidence holds him back in policework and in life. Completely in love with Sato.

Shiratori - A smooth-talking police inspector and Takagi's rival. Comes from a wealthy family.

Minami Takayama - This vocalist of the real-life pop duo Two-Mix appears as "herself" in a few episodes. She also plays the voice of Conan. Takayama is a very famous pop singer in Japan, so it is humorous that Conan has a notoriously bad singing voice. Cartoon versions of other real-life Japanese celebrities appear in a number of episodes.

Okina Yoko - Mr. Mouri's favorite actress/singer. Mouri/Moore and Conan helped her in their second case together (episode 3) and she appears sporadically throughout the series.

Chris Vineyard - An American actress. Her late mother Sharon Vineyard was also a famous actress, and a friend of Conan's mother.

Akai Shuichi - This Japanese-American is occasionally spotted in the background sporting a woolen cap. He is a recurring character whose significance is not revealed until much later in the series.

The Black Organization - A mysterious criminal syndicate whose members dress entirely in black. Shinichi/Jimmy's original encounter with the group resulted in his exposure to the mystery drug and transformation into Conan. Now Conan's biggest goal is to uncover their secrets.
