The race began.

"She's fast," thought Michiru.

The girls reached the end of the pool.

"That was a tie," said Ami, enthusiastically.

 

Michiru got out of the pool and walked away. "Why did you slow down? Were you trying to go easy on me?"

"I'm sorry," stammered Ami, "I didn't mean to.  Really."

Michiru didn't reply, so Ami picked up her things and left.


"You made her cry," Haruka scolded Michiru in a casual, offhand voice.
"I was only..." began Michiru.
"She wanted to be friends, that's all," said Haruka, "She doesn't have confidence in herself and unconsciously wanted to avoid any sort of conflict .  Now look what you've done."
"I just wanted to have a good race," replied Michiru defensively, "But I can't leave her that way..."

Ami left the recreation centre by herself. "What a loser I am..." she thought.
